THE CHEEK OF IT! CHALLENGE

January 29, 2010

Don’t have personal trainers and au-pairs on 24-hour standby? Here’s a bottom-blitzing challenge for all us mere mortals:

Do bottom contractions while you’re brushing your teeth (that’s a full two minutes). It may not sound like much, but you’d be surprised at the difference it makes.

ImageWhat great legs you have!

Things to look out for:

  • If you feel any other muscle more than the glutes, stop what you’re doing (and congratulate yourself) because this means your glute muscles are fatigued and other muscles are trying to step in.
  • Maintain a slow and controlled pace throughout the exercises. Quick and jerky motions are less effective as they cause other muscles to get involved. They also built momentum which decreases the work being done by the glutes.
  • Breath out when contracting the glutes and breath in when relaxing them, and take slow deep breaths during the exercises (well, as best you can when you’re brushing your teeth). Holding your breath just increases the chance of other muscles getting involved and ruining all that good work.

Get started now and don’t forget to let us know how it goes!

What are the glutes muscles?

Hi Marggaret,
‘Glutes’ is an abbreviation for gluteus maximus, the large muscles that form each of the buttocks.
